The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World

Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, Douglas Carlton Abrams 2016
Read: 2023
Non-Fiction, Spirtuality

Wow. This is an amazing book. This is a book I will be re-reading for many, many years.

The narrator of the book chronicles a series of conversations between the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu. Both of these men are regarded by their respective religions, and by most of the world, as holy men of great wisdom. They are clearly very good friends who admire, respect, and truly like each other.

I loved their focus on talking about what living with true joy means.  Both men have endured great hardships, so they know what it means to overcome that and live a life of joy. They push each other, and have a playful yet respectful way of conversing. They speak of suffering, and how a life of gratitude and compassion can help to rise above that suffering.

The book gives hope for a world where we listen to each other and rise above our differences.

As I said, I’ll be re-reading this for many years.
